Some international students can get their study permits faster by using the Student Direct Stream.
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) provides a streamlined study application process for students with strong
English or French language abilities who will enter into their program of study at an eligible post-secondary
Designated Learning Institute (DLI). The list can be found here.
Who can apply
You can apply if you’re a legal resident in:
- China
- India
- the Philippines, or
- Vietnam
If you live in another country (even if you’re a citizen of one of the countries above), you have to apply through the regular study permit application process.

After you apply
If your application is complete, the Visa Officer will start reviewing it right away.

If the Visa Officer approves your application
The Visa Officer will send you:
- a letter of introduction
- Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction
- You need to show this letter to the immigration official when you arrive in Canada. It is not your study permit.
- a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) to enter Canada
- The visa will be in your passport. You must enter Canada before it expires.
Your study permit is valid until the end of your college/university program.
If the Visa Officer refuse your application
The Visa Officer will send you a letter explaining why you were refused. If you have questions about why you were refused, contact the visa office that sent the refusal letter.
Updating your application
If you move or change your address, telephone number or any other contact information after you apply, you must inform the Visa Office immediately.
